Südtirol Climate Plan 2040: comparison between participatory bodies

A concrete climate policy through active participation: The working groups of the Citizens’ Climate Council and the Climate Stakeholder Forum met on Saturday. Energy, housing, mobility, consumption and production, as well as food and land use are the key themes on which the Citizens’ Climate Council and the Climate Stakeholder Forum have been working since January 2024. The two participation formats held the their first joint meeting on the “Südtirol 2040 Climate Plan” at the NOI Techpark in Bozen. “The main objective of this comparison was to identify possible synergies in the proposals and recommendations currently being developed, thus giving them greater weight“, explained Klaus Egger, responsible for sustainability of the provincial government.

The dialogue took place at working group level. “The main objective was to mutually inspire the proposals being developed“, reports consultant Sabina Frei. “It became clear that some recommendations would be specific to the Citizens’ Climate Council or the Climate Stakeholder Forum, while others were of common interest“. Participants listened to the other working group’s preliminary findings and then focused their discussions on common themes. The final meeting of the Stakeholder Climate Forum will be held in mid-May and that of the Citizens’ Climate Council in early June. The preparation of the recommendations of the two bodies will follow in a final document, which will be presented to the Provincial Executive and Council in the autumn.

Shaping climate policy in an even more concrete way through active participation: the provincial government committed itself to this when it adopted the “Südtirol 2040 Climate Plan” in July 2023. The two bodies with which it intends to achieve this objective – the Citizens’ Council for Climate and the Stakeholder Climate Forum – began their work in January 2024. Since then, the two groups have met three times each and the first joint dialogue was held yesterday.

The Stakeholder Climate Forum has 75 members from trade unions, culture, social affairs, environment and economics, while the Citizens’ Climate Council is made up of 56 citizens of all ages and fields of activity, a cross-section of South Tyrolean society. All information on the participation process for the implementation of the Südtirol 2040 Climate Plan is available on the web portal https://www.klimaland.bz/it/.
