An exemplary rescue operation coordinated between several emergency teams saved a life this Sunday, demonstrating once again the critical importance of air rescue in medical emergency situations.

The helicopter rescue team of the Locri base, made up of the pilot commander Quaia, the technician Lo Presti, the anesthetist resuscitator Andricciola and the critical area nurse Lamantea, was alerted by the Catanzaro Operations Center for a case of cardiac arrest and reached the accident site in record time.

On site, the Alessi nurses Alessandra and Marra Marisa and the Red Cross volunteer Alessi Valentina were already busy giving cardiac massage to the patient. The 118 team from the Taurianova station, composed of the rescue driver Ierace Domenico, the nurse Crea Carmelo and the doctor Galluzzo Massimo, had already carried out three defibrillation attempts, without however managing to re-establish the patient’s spontaneous cardiac activity.

Thanks to the perfect integration between the teams, cardiopulmonary resuscitation was continued according to the ACLS protocol, in a remarkable collaborative effort. 70 minutes into cardiac arrest, the patient finally showed signs of recovery.

Immediately, the patient was transferred by air ambulance to the Grand Metropolitan Hospital of Reggio Calabria, where the resuscitators and hemodynamists were waiting for him for an urgent coronary angiography operation. The patient was treated with the insertion of a stent in the occluded coronary artery and is currently under intensive observation.

This case highlights not only the effectiveness of air rescue in offering timely interventions in difficult to reach areas, but also the importance of collaboration between different emergency services to ensure the best chance of survival in critical situations.

The coordination between the different teams and the use of advanced medical technology played a fundamental role in the positive outcome of this operation, reiterating the invaluable value of these resources in the management of medical emergencies.
