The police are investigating and have identified those responsible

A 60-year-old man and some of his family members were attacked in Cardeto, in the province of Reggio Calabria, and his son-in-law’s car was subsequently set on fire.

The episode occurred yesterday in the late afternoon when the victim was approached outside his home by some people with whom he had had an argument.

One of these had a wooden stick in his hand with which he threatened the son and son-in-law of the 60-year-old who got the worst of it.

The latter, in an attempt to defend his family, was hit several times in the head, back and arm, suffering several abrasions.

Shortly after the physical attack, the son-in-law’s car, parked outside the house, was set on fire after the family returned home. In addition to the firefighters, who put out the fire, the 118 health workers intervened on site.

The carabinieri of the Cardeto station and the provincial command are investigating the attack and are trying to reconstruct the motive.

Having informed the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Reggio Calabria, led by Giovanni Bombardieri, the investigators suspect that the beating may be linked to a sporting competition that was held yesterday in Cardeto.

But it cannot be ruled out that there could be more. For this reason the Carabinieri and the prosecutors have started investigations to understand what happened in the small municipality in the foothills of the province of Reggio where, in a month, the elections will be held for the local elections.

Some alleged attackers have already been identified and it is not excluded that they may be summoned to the barracks in the next few hours.

Finally, the police are trying to understand whether whoever hit the sixty-year-old with the stick, causing bruises all over his body, was also responsible for the car fire.
