Pedemonte’s return to his Trentino

The commitment of Alberto Baldessari Coordinator of the LET’S GO BACK TO TRENTINO COMMITTEE, who has long been at the forefront to promote and raise awareness of the cause of Pedemonte among the affected municipalities, with a resolution tends to urge the President of the Veneto Regional Council to “issue a declaration of principle consensual” in favor of the return of Pedemonte to the Province of origin. The resolution will be sent as soon as possible to the President and the Veneto Council. In June there will be elections for the renewal of the City Council (it is now the fourth time this has happened after our referendum!) and I hope that the next Administration will also maintain this line which allows Pedemonte and Casotto (like Magasa and Valvestino) to maintain a privileged and special channel with Trento. We therefore invite everyone to support the candidates who are committed to decisively pursuing the cause which is in favor of all the inhabitants of Pedemonte and Casotto. Last 8 April there was an institutional meeting with the parliamentarians of the Südtiroler Volkspartei Meinhard Durnwalder and Dieter Steger, at the headquarters of the Autonomous Province of Trento, in the presence of the Mayors of Pedemonte, Magasa and Valvestino and the Councilor Provincial Simone Marchiori.

The willingness of that Party to present and carry forward two separate bills for the return of the former Tyrolean Municipalities (one for Pedemonte, one for Magasa and Valvestino) to the Roman seat was reiterated. It will be a long and difficult journey as it is a constitutional law that will require a double passage between the House and the Senate at least six months apart, and for this reason we cannot wait any longer. At this point we have the obligation, and the pleasure, to remember that it is not the first time that the local population has asked the Südtiroler Volkspartei for help. Exactly 76 years ago (it was in fact 4 May 1948) a heartfelt letter was sent to the leadership of that Party (after having unsuccessfully addressed the Ministry of the Interior, the Prime Minister, the Province of Trento, the Province and the Prefect of Vicenza etc….) asking for help for the reconstitution of the Municipality of Casotto, as an indispensable act to then be able to return to the province of Trento.

The letter retraces all the stages of the sad fate of Pedemonte, and above all of Casotto (which in 1940 had also lost its municipal autonomy and had become a simple hamlet of Valdastico), after the forced detachment from Trento: a testimony that deserves to be better known .

Even on the occasion of the local referendum in 2010, we turned to a South Tyrolean, the then President of the Province of Bolzano Luis Durnwalder, to obtain an authoritative reassurance regarding the maintenance of the rights of the Casottans linked to the Rule: his intervention, punctual, did not due and above all disinterested, was probably decisive for the success of the referendum.
