In Bologna, at the CGIL, the Ires study on Environment and Territory was presented. What emerges is that the Emilia Romagna Region still has a way to go in protecting the environment. Indeed, Worrying levels of pollution were reported but also an increase in land consumption with 635 more hectares lost in 2022 compared to 2021. In this sense, Rimini is the city that consumes the most land, while Bologna and Piacenza are the provinces that saw the percentages of hectares lost increase in 2022.

Finally, Emilia-Romagna produces an enormous quantity of waste and is in twelfth place among all the Regions, nullifying its fourth place in separate waste collection.. On the positive side, there is a small decrease in waste production compared to 2021. In fact, in 2022 it decreased by 1.2%. The best province is that of Forli-Cesena which recorded a decrease of 4.5%.

“We need continuity of approach. Even if the data may give contradictory ideas, in the future the efforts made and the plans put in place should achieve much more effective objectives than those of past years” – warns Maurizio Lunghi, secretary of the CGIL Emilia-Romagna with responsibility for the environment. “Emilia-Romagna is the Italian region with the highest production of waste per inhabitant – underlines Gianluca De Angelis, Ires researcher and editor of the report -. In 2022, the over 2.8 tonnes of waste produced bring per capita production to 633.4 kg from 640.7 kg in 2021. The variation is -1.14%, based on Ispra data. Tourist flows place strong pressure on collection systems. The 2022 provincial data show that the per capita production of waste is much above the regional data in the provinces of Reggio nell’Emilia, Ravenna, Piacenza and Rimini with, respectively, 744, 719, 702 and 690 kg per inhabitant” .
