Sambiase repeats the title of Excellence by also winning the Region Super Cup, the canonical trophy up for grabs by the Regional Committee in the triangular tournament between the winners of the Excellence and Promotion championships. Mister Morelli’s Giallorossi first beat Rossanese 3-0 thanks to Abayian’s brace and Espinar’s goal and, subsequently, Ardore 2-0, with the latter having, in turn, beaten Rossanese by 5 -4 after penalty shots (0-0 after 45 minutes of regulation).
The first match between the winners of the two Promotion groups was hard fought. Rossanese and Ardore battle, but are unable to find the right gap to unlock the challenge. Not even the different changes of the two coaches brought about a change of pace and the goalless draw dragged on until the penalty shoot-out. The rossoblu made mistakes with Carrozza and Nicolini, while Libri was the only one to fail for Mr. Criaco’s team. The all-out penalty scored by substitute Sanchez was decisive for Ardore’s victory.
Rossanese who by virtue of the knockout immediately returns to the field to challenge the host Sambiase. The Giallorossi, however, immediately made the pitch advantage count, pushed by the many fans crowded in the “Gianni Renda” stands, and resolved the dispute in the first twelve minutes of the game. Abayian broke the deadlock with a penalty in the third minute, followed by Espinar’s second in the eighth. Then, in the twelfth minute, the second goal from number 9 Abayian, which closes the game at 3-0 for Sambiase.
Decisive match between Sambiase and Ardore, very close, the hosts push, but Reggio defend themselves with order until the thirty-third, when Crucitti’s shot is deflected unstoppably by Schiavello. With the partial broken, the Giallorossi came close to scoring on several occasions and found the second goal at the last gasp with Djalo’s header from close range.
The three participating clubs are rewarded for their respective championship victories in the Regional Committee ceremony, but Sambiase seals the splendid day of sport by lifting the Region’s Super Cup Trophy amidst the applause of its fans. Present were Saverio Mirarchi, president of CR Calabria, the vice president Antonio Ferrazzo and the councilors Antonio Caroleo and Vincenzo Insardà.
