Coast Guard rescue

A complex rescue operation took place yesterday evening at the mouth of the Tiber, near Fiumara grande a Fiumicino, where a sailboat with an elderly man and his granddaughter on board ran aground in shallow water. There Coast Guard of Fiumicino intervened promptly with two boats, the CP 831 and the A10 boat, to assist the two occupants of the vessel.

The operations room of the Port Authority of Rome received a request for assistance via radio and promptly deployed the emergency vehicles which reached the pleasure craft in difficulty. The elderly host and his granddaughter were found in good health conditions, despite the critical situation.

The rescue

Coast Guard crews worked to refloat the sailboat, using ship’s lines for a makeshift tow. After several attempts and just before sunset, the unit was finally refloated and subsequently moored safely at a local shipyard.

The dangerous stretch

Despite the signs and warnings about the danger of the Fiumara canal, due to the presence of a sandbank which reduces the depth, this accident marks the third time in the last month in which a pleasure boat has run aground in this stretch. The Port Authority of Rome has repeatedly released nautical information to warn seafarers of these risks. In response to these recurring problems, the Lazio Region has authorized an emergency safety intervention, carried out by the consortium of shipbuilding operators and canal landing points. The objective is to reduce the danger of navigation in view of the upcoming summer season, trying to prevent further accidents in an area frequented by boaters and sea lovers.
