PESCARA. The blue bow is still there dangling on the entrance door of the apartment on the third floor in via Basento, in the heart of San Donato. The little one would have been one month old in a few days, on May 9th, to the joy of his very young parents in their early twenties and his three little brothers. And instead his life came to an end yesterday morning around 10am while he was sleeping in his bed. The attempts to resuscitate him by the 118 doctors were useless, amidst the desperation of the mother and father which became more and more excruciating minute after minute.
The causes of the premature death of the newborn are yet to be ascertained. The prosecutor on duty Luca Sciarretta ordered the autopsy and a technical consultant was also appointed to understand the reasons for the death, also because on the bed where the infant was lying the rescuers found traces of blood and immediately alerted the police headquarters operations room. The alarm was raised by the mother of the newborn who noticed that the little one was no longer showing signs of life and first asked for help from a neighbor on the landing and immediately after picked up the phone to call the ambulance. The 118 health personnel remained for a long time in the bedroom of the public house in via Basento, trying in every way to resuscitate the child, but unfortunately there was nothing left to do and the doctors were unable to do anything other than note death. The police also arrived on site, with the Volante and Mobile patrols who immediately started investigating the case. All hypotheses are currently being examined: whether it was cot death syndrome, whether the child was struck by an illness, suffocation caused by regurgitation or even crushing, thus fearing a possible involuntary responsibility of the adults who they were with him. From an initial visual examination of the victim’s little body there would appear to be no wounds or signs of violence, but some further details will only emerge from the autopsy which will be carried out at the beginning of next week.
“It’s a tragedy, an absurd fatality”, comment half-heartedly to the couple’s family who throughout yesterday never left the child’s two parents and three other siblings alone. A good family, say the people of the neighborhood. The couple with their children had not long lived in that apartment in the red brick building in San Donato, a short distance from the Avis headquarters, also managing a club for a few months. A family destroyed by grief, holed up in the council house on the third floor of via Basento to cry all their tears, surrounded by the affection of friends and family.
