«I wish each of the Sanni candidates a good result, in line with their expectations. Frankly, I don’t think they have much chance of success, but I always appreciate the commitment of those who measure themselves against the electorate and public opinion. Especially when you do it with elections, one of the few remaining, in which there is a preferential vote and it is possible to measure one’s worth on a personal level.” It is the scenario outlined by Umberto Del Basso De Caroformer administrator and councilor at the Municipality of Beneventoas well as regional councilor and deputy, in view of the European elections with respect to the candidacies of the three competing Samnites: Sandra Mastella, Luigi Barone and Piernicola Pedicini. Although without offices and responsibilities, De Caro remains “the soul mundi” of the Samnite Democratic Party and, despite having concentrated his energies in his profession (he is a criminal lawyer), he does not lose sight of the activities of the party to which he does not missing one’s closeness and contribution.
Will the Samnite Democratic Party support Antonio Decaro at the European Championships?
“Yes. Naturally there are then two other preferences and our voters will be free to choose who to vote for. Decaro is our friend and is known because in addition to being mayor of Bari he is still president of Anci, the national association of Italian municipalities. I was also a deputy with him, we have a good relationship and I support him with pleasure.”
Why isn’t there a Samnite candidate on the list?
«They had asked us for a man and a woman and we also had the possibility of doing so but putting a candidate from Benevento meant supporting him until the end and blocking a preference. I’m not convinced that citizens will write three names on the ballot.”
Administrative, the Democratic Party is playing an important match in San Giorgio del Sannio.
«Voting takes place in many municipalities of Sannio and San Giorgio is the largest demographically. We have entrusted Giovanna Petrillo, who is deputy provincial secretary and also outgoing municipal councilor, with an exploratory mandate to discuss within the party and outside it and find the best solution to be able to participate in a virtuous way. The next few hours will be decisive.”
About other municipalities?
«We are present everywhere either at the top level, i.e. the candidate for mayor, or with a good presence on the civic lists».
The European Championships precede the Regionals. The center-right is aiming to take over the presidency of Palazzo Santa Lucia, is there any way to counter it?
«I hope so, I don’t think the center-right in Campania is as good as in the rest of Italy. It is structurally weaker and has a leadership group that is not up to the standards of those of the Democratic Party. We can win, especially if the candidate is the outgoing Vincenzo De Luca.”
Why is there still a possibility of a third term?
«Not at present, but we need to see after the European elections how the scenarios will change, even within the individual parties. There is no absolute truth.”
After the European elections, could we also think about the end of the party’s administration in Campania?
«There is a serious responsibility in this regard and it is not ours. The conference audiences have been defined and the conference could have been held some time ago, it was a national political choice that I personally have never shared but I am forced to respect. The party has already been under administration for two years and that is an eternity for a force in a region which is the first in southern Italy and which expresses numerous personalities. I think of Vincenzo De Luca, but also of the mayor of Naples Gaetano Manfredi.”
Would you hold institutional positions in the future?
«I have never been afraid to measure myself and I believe, numbers in hand, that I have always made a good impression. However, sometimes if there is no real and concrete possibility of success it seems to me more like therapeutic obstinacy.”
