Stork-Day postponed to May 12 due to strong winds

Cicogna day, the initiative organized by the Pro Biodiversity Foundation and the ODV Environmental Education Center association, in collaboration with Lipu, Cea, Biviere Ente Gestore, Fai Caltanissetta, Slow Food, agricultural companies and many other associations which was to take place on April 28th was postponed to Sunday May 12th due to the wind storm with gusts of over 50km/h which affected the Gela plain, causing damage in the Geloi Wetland private nature reserve, the private nature oasis where the kemesse.

«The gusts of wind destroyed 5 stands and tore up the installed structures, but the wind doesn’t stop us – says Manuel Zafarana, manager of the reserve – We have postponed the event which will be held on Sunday 12 May. The program includes workshops for boys and girls, association stands, a guitar and violin concert at sunset and much more.

We are also grateful to the sponsoring companies of the initiative such as Mecogest and the partners Catalano Vini, La Cicogna Bio, Barunissa who kept their promise to participate with desire and passion also on May 12th. Many asked us with concern whether the strong gusts had caused problems for the white storks. Fortunately, no nests were affected and our stork pairs will be observable from a short distance during the event, with binoculars and telescopes.”

We remind you that the event intends to celebrate and protect the nesting of white storks which until last year built their nests on electric pylons, while now they have wooden platforms at their disposal, specially installed by the reserve operators, safe from human threats. Furthermore, they have the opportunity to feed themselves and look after their young adequately, being able to find food near lakes and marshes and not in dangerous landfills.
