They leave the basilica every first Sunday of May. This is the secular destiny of the Ceri. The ceraioli will carry them in a horizontal position from the Basilica of Sant’Ubaldo to the Sala dell’Arengo of the Palazzo dei Consoli through the newly reopened Piazza Grande. The descent of the Ceri is the prelude to the celebration of May 15th, the obligatory passage announced by the mass in the basilica, at 8, officiated by the chaplain and vicar general of the diocese, Don Mirko Orsini, in front of the protagonists who will then take them to the city in the slalom between the construction sites for the many works, especially in Piazza Quaranta Martiri.
It will be the first act of the 2024 festival for the Captains, Luigino Bei and Fabio Mariani, and the Capodieci Francesco Morelli of Sant’Ubaldo, Simone Martini of San Giorgio and Enrico Provvedi of Sant’Antonio. The voice of the bell, from the turret of the Palazzo dei Consoli, will be the soundtrack to welcome them as well as on Christmas Eve at 7pm, as per tradition. For the descent of the Ceri the Colle Eletto cable car will facilitate the connection with the patron’s basilica.
