Jhonatan Narvaez won the first stage of the Giro d’Italia 2024, a fraction of 140 kilometers from Venaria Reale to Turin. The Ecuadorian managed to contain the deadly attack by Tadej Pogacar on the San Vito climb when there were four kilometers to go to the finish line and then he beat the Slovenian, the big favorite on the eve of winning the Trofeo Senza Fine, in a three-man sprint given that the German Maximilian Schachmann had rejoined on the descent.
Frenchman Alexin Baudin was fourth, Nicola Conci was fifth at 10 seconds, leading a small group which also included Antonio Tiberi and the British Geraint Thomas. On the Colle della Maddalena, two heralded big names, the French Romain Bardet and the Dutch Thymen Arensman, ran into great difficulty.
