The coach of Genoa Alberto Gilardino spoke in Press conference on the eve of tomorrow night’s match against Milan. These are Gilardino’s words:
On contract renewal: “We have found a verbal agreement with the company, we will see each other again in the next few days. I’m happy and I’m happy. It has always been my desire and my will. I had spoken about it to the company in the past few weeks. There is the desire to give continuity to the work done with my staff and with the team. Details are missing but there was a very positive verbal agreement.”
On Matturro: “He has been training with the team for a few days. He has come a long way and we wanted to bring him back to the team as quickly as possible. He has great desire, I have to make some assessments for tomorrow, in the meantime he must continue his journey but I hope to bring him to the bench in the next matches and maybe be able to use him”.
On injured people and training: “Gudmundsson needs to be evaluated, there’s the finishing touches and then we’ll leave for Milan. We hope, and hope, to recover it. Vitinha did well with Cagliari, he is working and from here onwards I will try to get him more playing time. The desire is both to provide continuity and at the same time to see players who in the last period have had little space compared to others to make an evaluation together with the club for the future”.
On Milan: “The future is called Milan and finishing the championship well by still scoring points. We have to compete as they did with other big names. We want to amaze and play matches on equal terms. Tomorrow we face a team trained very well by Mister Pioli. Milan are second in the table and have a similar points average to when they won the championship. It’s a strong team on inactive balls.”
On Retegui: “For attackers, goals are important, it’s stimulating for attackers to score. What I tell him is to stay focused on what he is doing well and on what his teammates need. Then the episodes will go towards him and he will certainly return to scoring.”
If having achieved the objectives changes the game: “We are very happy to have achieved the objective set five days early, but we need to give continuity from the point of view of attitude and the desire to improve as an individual, in the team, but also in the desire to amaze and hold on to the result. These are important considerations to make. Milan is a team that can put everyone in difficulty at any moment of the match. We know what environment we will find but we must try to limit them when we have the ball and are in their midfield.”
On which attacking pair you prefer: “I like all the various solutions, which are in tune with the way of playing. Albert is more of an attacking midfielder, an attacking midfielder compared to Vitinha who is more of a second striker.”
If he thought he was doing so well: “That was the dream. Starting in retreat there were some difficulties but I always had a clear picture: this team had something strong and had great human qualities, things that allowed us to have a great championship. We have always believed in it, we have always fought and this has been the strength of the boys. I’m happy”.
On the championship finale: “We must continue to dream and improve. It must be a collective and personal goal to score as many points as possible. We know tomorrow it will be a difficult match like the others. This championship leads you to meet strong teams, you always have to stay within the game.”
