Brindisi, the shortcomings of Perrino. Amati thunders at radiology: «Only slogans and promises»

BRINDISI – «Still nothing on interventional radiology at Perrino in Brindisi. Yet they had to reactivate it and solve the problem 108 days ago. Instead we continue to only have a protocol for transporting patients to the hospitals of Lecce and Taranto.” It is yet another complaint from regional councilor Fabiano Amati, who underlines how “the protocol has been contested by all interventional radiologists and emergency experts, because it is not clear what happens to the non-transportable patients from Brindisi”. Yet, according to Amati, the solution would be simple: all it would take is «an inter-company measure, with compensation, to temporarily bring some interventional radiologist to Brindisi capable of training the radiologists currently in service or about to be hired. A corporate organizational measure, in excerpt, to establish the complex operational unit of interventional radiology, eliminating one of the many useless ones in operation, so as to also make the Brindisi office attractive”.

And if interventional radiology cries, diagnostic radiology doesn’t laugh. «We are waiting for the hiring of postgraduates, apparently prevented by the University of Bari despite having received reassurance of a prompt solution from both the rector and the general director. But I no longer want reassurances from press releases, accompanied by photo opportunities. This is not how healthcare is done. I only want certainties – he concludes – about the service, because it is the only fact that coincides with people’s health”.

The dispute between Amati and the rector of the University of Bari, Stefano Bronzini, is linked to the fact that the ASL would like to hire 20 specialists through a public notice but cannot do so because the director of the specialization school of Medicine does not authorize the signing of the contract .

Specifically, out of 42 specialist radiologists summoned by the ASL, only seven were hired on a fixed-term basis until 31 December 2024, with temporary assignment to the complex operational unit of Radiodiagnostics of Perrino and with the commitment to rotate in the hospitals of Francavilla , Fasano and Ostuni.

The rector had tried to downplay the incident by explaining that “those who are not yet able to read the echo cannot take up service” and that therefore there would be no veto from the director of the graduate school. However, from a statement sent by the ASL to Amati, there are seven trainees capable of using echo (and in one case also of doing angiography) who were not authorized to take up service.
