A long life, that of the engineer Sergio Vannini, lived fully as a great man of culture and passion, but above all of great humanity. He passed away at the age of 94, on the morning of Saturday 4 May at the Apuan hospital, where he was hospitalized due to a worsening of his condition compromised by pneumonia and respiratory failure. The engineer Sergio Vannini was born in Livorno in 1930 and graduated in engineering from the University of Pisa. He arrived in Carrara at the beginning of the Sixties due to a choice dictated by the heart and passion he had for the Apuan Alps, shared with his beloved wife Maria Grazia, who passed away two years ago. Having won the competition to enter the public administration, as chief engineer of public works, he was offered several possible locations and he chose Carrara because he was in love with its beautiful landscape. Since then, he always lived in Marina di Carrara, although he also always remained linked to Livorno, where the rest of his family was. In the municipality of Carrara he held the role of chief engineer of public works and then became director of the municipal utility. He later moved to the municipality of Massa where he worked for 25 years, also carrying out an important collaboration with CONI for the design of sports facilities. Engineer Vannini was a man in love with life: he cultivated many interests, from literature, as an attentive and passionate reader, to sport, which he loved and practiced with the awareness of a professional athlete. Member of the CAI of Livorno, he knew all the routes of the Apuan Alps – one of the reasons that led him to choose to live in Carrara – he was also a skier, linked in particular to the Abetone ski resort, a swimmer and a scuba diving enthusiast . He had a great culture also derived from having traveled all over the world together with his wife and, later, also with his beloved daughter Beatrice, a well-known lawyer and leading figure in national and local associations, a passion derived precisely from his father who was member of the Lions Massa Carrara Host and of the Panthlon. Together with Beatrice Vannini, the death of the engineer Sergio is also mourned by his beloved nephew Pietro, his son-in-law and a brother.
The funeral will be held on Monday 6 May at 4pm in the church of San Pietro in Avenza.
