Lamezia, prevention and information: at the Perri-Pitagora institute, the “Life at stake” project-exhibition on pathological gambling

Lamezia Terme – The “La vita in gioco” project was born with the aim of preventing and informing about gambling addictions, with a traveling exhibition “Gambling: let’s not call it a game” set up at the Istituto Comprensivo Perri-Pitagora, for a initiative promoted by the Vivere In Movement, represented by professor Maria Rita Di Cello, in collaboration with the Zarapoti social cooperative, represented by the president Ampelio Anfossi, and with the Serd of the provincial ASP, represented by the director Giulia Audino and the psychologist responsible for Lamezia Maria Rita Notaro. Participants in the four meetings which involved the children – particularly the pupils of III F, III G and III E – were also teachers, in particular Professor Ivana Giannini, and other entities active in the area such as the Meter association. After the greetings of the manager Giuseppe De Vita and the interventions of the personalities who attended, dedicated to the presentation of the respective institutions to which they belong, the protagonists of the project were the young people, who were divided into three groups headed by the representatives Fabio Rizzuto, Alice Giampà and Valeria Mercuri , presented their institute, and then the project, materialized in a series of video interviews with classmates and teachers on the topic of gambling and in a questionnaire developed by the Zarapodi cooperative, the results of which in percentage terms were shown to the audience.

The questionnaire actually revealed some rather reassuring data about the young people belonging to the Institute’s circle, among whom 100% declared that they did not know anyone who was addicted to pathological gambling, and 29% declared that they only gambled occasionally. time with family members, 50% playing for less than 5 euros and the remaining 50% no amount.

As many as 92% do not feel at risk, while only 8% say they don’t know. It is also a sign of the positive impact of projects like this one, which is being held at the institute for the second year. It’s a shame that the general data, reported by Doctor Audino, are much more alarming: “More and more young people are turning to our service”, declares the director, reporting 2000 total users for the provincial Serd, distributed between Catanzaro, Lamezia and Soverato and inclusive of all substance and non-substance addictions, and more than 200 daily accesses to Catanzaro for the control of drug therapy. It is therefore important to prevent, as explained by Doctor Notaro and President Anfossi, who works with the cooperative through a mobile unit, to detect cases of hardship in the provincial territory. Cases that can then be addressed to the Serd in a completely anonymous and free form, gaining awareness of an increasingly widespread problem.
