On Sunday 5 May, midwives from around the world join together to celebrate the International Day of the Midwife. For 2024, the central theme of the day is the climate crisis which, in recent years, has been gripping the world with often devastating effects on the environment and people.
«Every climate catastrophe – he underlines Cristiana Pavesi, midwife director of the Maternal and Child area of the Piacenza Local Health Authority – has devastating effects on the population with a great impact on women and children. As midwives our role is certainly to be on the front line to guarantee support and qualified assistance in the management of emergencies by providing adequate health services, but also to be, together with other health workers, an instrument of a new awareness, supporting women in their decision-making power. For this reason, the professionals of the Local Health Authority of Piacenza active in the hospital and in the network of local clinics also join together to support this important day. Midwives are key actors in designing resilient health systems; therefore, we ask for policies that include our professionalism in the planning of climate actions, also in order to invest in sustainable care models in the belief that the promotion of women’s health also depends on this”.
In Piacenza they operate in total 77 professionals: 57 within the hospital structure of Piacenza and 20 in the clinics of the territorial network.
«Midwives – highlights Cristiana Pavesi – have a fundamental role throughout the lifespan of women and certainly in the period of pregnancy, during childbirth and in the puerperium. They accompany them, orient them, support them in the new dimension that birth and care for the newborn brings with it, managing the physiology of these events and remaining attentive to identifying potentially pathological situations that require the intervention of a doctor.”
In order to celebrate their day together with women and couples – writes the ASL – the midwives of the ASL of Piacenza, with the patronage of the Interprovincial Order of Parma and Piacenza, have organized two meetings next week:
– Thursday 9 May 2024 from 2.30pm to 5.30pm there will be an in-person visit to the delivery rooms and a chat with the hospital midwives. Participants will be able to use the entrance from the waiting room of the outpatient clinics of the delivery room of the Piacenza hospital.
– Friday 10 May 2024 from 3pm to 5pm at the Galleria del Sole clinic – at Galleria del Sole 67 – a meeting will be held with midwives on various topics such as the use of the baby carrier, complementary nutrition and post-birth care.
