Mirra nursery school in Piacenza turns 100 years old and has seen thousands of children grow up

The Mirra nursery school is the oldest in Piacenza and is one hundred years old. It was inaugurated in 1924 in the building in via Campagna n. 40 built thanks to the bequest of the lawyer Emilio Mirra, two houses and farms, who wanted to be remembered on the frontispiece. How many people from Piacenza will have passed through here? Thousands, one city.

MIRRA ASYLUM

In 1933 the Kindergarten Society was in financial difficulty, management and teaching passed into the hands of religious staff until 1997, first the Canossian nuns, then those of the Good Shepherd, the last being Sister Gisella Zucchini. In the 90s the help of the Parish of Santa Brigida, with Don Giovanni Montanari, supported an important restructuring and adaptation to the law. The canteen area is rearranged, windows are opened, laboratories in the former cells of the nuns and even a photography set. The school becomes secular. When Mirra was founded, it saw in the field people linked to the world of pedagogy and religion, but the educational aspect was immediately joined to the welfare aspect. From nursery schools we move on to structures where, in addition to support for families – explains Biella – children can find support from a learning point of view. Today the goal is to forge a critical spirit from an early age.
On Saturday 11 May, in the morning and afternoon, a big party will be held at Mirra open to families and citizens.
