ROSE GARDEN. The bus cannot pass on the seafront due to the presence of the market and so the tourists are forced to get off the vehicle, go through the underpass on state road 16 where, waiting for them, there is another bus made available by the hotel where they they stay to take them on a planned excursion to Sulmona and Scanno.
This happened yesterday morning on the central seafront of Roseto, Thursday market day with part of the central seafront closed. «I’ve been stuck since early yesterday morning», says the bus driver, «and I only managed to get through at 1.30pm, at the end of the market. Luckily, the hotel arranged to call another bus to guarantee its customers the daily excursion, but I lost half a day. I also tried to get around, but it’s impossible with the bus. I wonder what could happen in case of emergencies for the passage of an emergency vehicle. It is not possible for this to happen in a tourist city.”
In reality, traffic is guaranteed both towards the north, passing through via Colombo and then turning onto via Genzano to rejoin the seafront, and towards the south, passing through the stretch of free seafront up to via Ariccia, where you then turn to continue along viale Rome. The problem however, as the driver highlighted, is that a large vehicle, be it a bus or a fire truck, to go from the seafront to state road 16 must necessarily reach the underpass of via Marco Polo, to the south, because it is the ‘only tall. Furthermore, previously there was the possibility of passing along the entire Viale Roma, but with the construction of the square in front of the pine forest, and the pedestrianization of the stretch from the pine forest to Via Thaulero, this is no longer possible.
With these episodes, the criticality of underpasses in the city is back in the news. For years there has been talk of the construction of an underpass north of Roseto, in correspondence with viale Makarska, to allow buses and emergency vehicles not to necessarily reach the southern side of the city and therefore allow the central stretch of the seafront to be closed without problems for the road system. The choice to move the Thursday market from the center of Roseto to the seafront was made by the Pavone administration. The previous administration tried to bring it back to the centre, without success, and the current administration, after temporarily moving it to the southern section of Viale Roma to allow work on the same avenue in the northern part, confirmed it on the central seafront.
