train traffic suspended between Terni and Foligno

Interventions that will involve 35 days of total stoppage, with Umbria which, from a railway point of view, will be split in two

Work has begun which will result in the blocking of the Orte-Falconara railway line for 35 days of total stoppage between Terni and Foligno with Umbria which, from a railway point of view, will be split in two.

Works which involve an investment of 20 million euros for the infrastructural upgrading of the Foligno-Orte railway line, carried out by Rete Ferrovia Italiana (RFI), the leading company of the infrastructural hub of the Ferrovie dello Stato Group, and which will start in the next few hours.

The interventions, which will last five weeks, will result in the suspension of train circulation between Foligno and Terni from 11.40pm on Friday 3 May to 5am on Saturday 8 June.

Inconveniences announced for commuters and tourists who use the train, but in truth these are necessary, strategic works to make the route safer and more modern, which also involves the doubling of the Foligno-Campello line.
Among the works in progress are the construction of a 40 meter rockfall tunnel to consolidate the rock walls between Terni and Giuncano, with the aim of protecting the railway from landslides, such as the one that occurred in January 2021, and other instability phenomena hydrogeological. In addition to this, the construction of a track on a prefabricated reinforced concrete structure using the innovative Slab Track methodology is planned in the Balduini tunnel, in the Baiano-Giuncano section, which will reduce the need for frequent maintenance interventions. A technological upgrade of the Spoleto station was then carried out, with the creation of the computerized central apparatus (ACC), a true control room capable of better managing railway circulation.

With these interventions, the technological improvement works necessary for the activation of the Ertms system (European Rail Traffic Management System/European Train Control System, a technology that allows the management, control and protection of railway traffic and related on-board signaling) will also be carried out. ).
The block will affect all trains going to Lazio not only from Umbria, but also long-distance trains arriving from the Marche (for example the Frecciargento), and will also have repercussions on the Rome-Florence line which passes through Orvieto.

A condition that has alarmed commuters and all those who use the train especially to go to work or study in Rome, who, worried about the blockade, have written to the Region (Infrastructure and Transport department) and to Trenitalia, the regional transport directorate of Umbria returning to request a meeting, in order to have clarifications regarding the works themselves, the timing of any suspension of the railway service, as well as – as already requested – “to find out the repercussions on the railway services and the actions to mitigate the inconveniences that will be created for users, also providing for possible compensations”.
