the idea of a bust in memory of Gandhi

BRINDISI – A bust of Gandhi displayed in the gardens of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, in memory of the Mahatma’s passage from the port of Brindisi, where, on 14 December 1931, he embarked on board a steamship bound for India.

This initiative would also have been discussed during an institutional meeting between the mayor of Brindisi, Giuseppe Marchionna, and the Indian ambassador to Rome, Vani Sarraju Rao, accompanied by the prime minister’s staff, which took place this afternoon, at the Municipality of Brindisi.

The ambassador was also welcomed by the prefect of Brindisi, Luigi Carnevale, and by the police commissioner Giampietro Lionetti.

“The visit – we read in a note from the municipal administration – strengthens and relaunches relations between India and the city of Brindisi, in the wake of the historic international route of the Indian Suitcase, of which the port of Brindisi was the necessary port of call between London and Bombay”.
