Comunali Aversa, Grimaldi (CD): “Misiani disconcerting, dead silence on Baldascino”. Goliath and his men ready for the solitary race

Mauro Baldascino and Filippo Panza

At the stroke of midnight the call ended. Off-air the comments will have been the same as the other times: “We wasted time”. And in fact last night too the Aversa centre-left summit ended without reaching its goal. Indeed, the goal of the agreement on the mayoral candidate is moving away. At the virtual table Antonio Misiani, Susanna Camusso and Eugenio Marino, respectively regional, provincial and citizen commissioners of the Democratic Party, the former deputies Giuseppe Buompane (M5S) and Nicola Grimaldi (Democratic Center), Antonio Di Ronza for La Politica che Serve, Antonio Dell’ Aquila and Fabio Carbone for Avs and Gabriele Vedova representing Aversa Progressista. An important parterre with the Dems fielding Misiani, number three in the party, very close to Elly Schlein. Agenda: the choice of the coalition leader. In the running are Filippo Panza, city spokesperson for the 5 Star Movement, and Mauro Baldascino, representative of Libera. The latter had already been crowned by the table almost two weeks ago. Then the recent turn by the Pd and the Five Star Movement towards Panza. The recurring question from the allies hit precisely on this issue: why was Baldascino dumped and Panza chosen?

Antonio Misiani and Susanna Camusso

A question we asked Grimaldi. “In all honesty, I am baffled by how the discussion unfolded. The Democratic Center asked the Dems and the 5 Stars several times why there was a step backwards regarding Baldascino after the signing of a joint document which indicated him as the candidate for mayor. In four hours of discussion – remarked Grimaldi – we didn’t have a shred of response. Not only. Misiani, Camusso and Marino didn’t even say why the Democratic Party supports Panza. I’m really in disbelief. Wanting to be optimistic, I hope that the dead silence of political exponents of this caliber is due to the need to record the positions of all the centre-left actors in order to then open a discussion within the party. But – says Grimaldi – the feeling is, as we were told superficially, that the Democratic Party is focusing on Panza because he is a political candidate. In my opinion, Baldascino is also a political candidate because he was a local administrator and because Libera, despite having no parties behind him, has been involved in “politics” for legality for years, is among the people, protects people. It is not politics as in the management of public affairs but it is politics in the highest sense of the term.” The Gordian knot remains the pro-Baldascino document signed by everyone. “Democratic Center – declares Grimaldi – will not ratify any other name unless we are given a valid explanation for the about-turn on Baldascino. We will not accept dummy solutions. If they insist on Panza without giving us valid reasons it means that they don’t want us in the coalition. They are the ones who will blow up the table.” What happens if Baldascino is no longer in the running? Grimaldi responds resolutely: “Everything is back on the line. We will propose Luigi Massa, our party candidate.” For the former deputy it is also a question of personal correctness towards Baldascino, “he has also been mistreated on a human level, he doesn’t deserve it”, says Grimaldi. He adds: “If an agreement is not reached by May 6, the Democratic Center will no longer participate in the negotiations.” And what will he do? The exponent of Tabacci’s party does not come clean. But there are two options: the solitary race with an authoritative mayoral candidate or the construction of a coalition with La Politica che Serve, Avs and Aversa Progressista. Even the group of former mayor Alfonso Golia, the followers of Bonelli and Fratoianni and Vedova are not at all willing to “burn” Baldascino’s name. They reiterated this yesterday too, demanding respect for the joint document. Misiani, Camusso and Marino did not respond to them either. End of call. Without a date to see each other again. A clear signal: the Pd-M5S axis holds. At least for now. Meanwhile, The Politics That Serves is mobilizing. The general meeting will be held today at 8.00 pm. The pro-Baldascino forces were also invited, as if to say to the dem and the Five Star Movement: “You focus on Panza, we focus on Baldascino”. But it is unlikely that Libera’s representative will accept the challenge without a united centre-left. So? Even Politics That Serve could go solo with two lists in contention. In short, everything is possible. At the moment it is easier to win the Eurojackpot than to predict the future of the center-left of Aversa.
