The appeal of the Committee “Poisons out. Crotone wants to live.” «The municipality’s willingness to appear before the courts is announced»

CROTONE The “Poisons Out” Committee. Crotone wants to live” highlights in a note how “Mayor Voce’s latest statements, contained in press release no. 138 of the Municipality of Crotone, regarding the clear opposition he will express to Eni Rewind’s request to remove the restriction to leave the poisons in Crotone require consistency”.
«Considering the conflicting positions taken by Voce on this delicate issue after his election as mayor – continues the committee – we take the liberty of expressing the hope that the announced opposition will be exercised coherently, without ifs or buts, avoiding schizophrenic positions that they are not suitable for those who have the responsibility of leading the city. Precisely for this reason we believe it is necessaryon the occasion of the Services Conference today 3 May 2024, ask Eni to account for the serious delays in the reclamation by announcing the desire of the Municipality of Crotone to appear in court for failure to carry out reclamation. On this proposal it is appropriate to also call upon the Province of Crotone to take a joint initiative, which in this sense should have played a supervisory role, and the Region in compliance with the resolution of the Regional Council of 22 June 2023 (motion n°58) which commits President Occhiuto to “counter even in the courts Eni’s attempt to overturn the resolution of the Services Conference” of 24 October 2019. It is also necessary to re-evaluate the costs of the reclamation estimated by Ispra in 2012 at one billion 731 million euros. Finally, as always with a constructive spirit, we advise Mayor Voce to avoid making instrumental appeals to the Vrenna brothers as owners of Sovreco.
Firstly because, as he himself recalls, that waste cannot be disposed of in the Sovreco landfill. Secondly, because the power to authorize the landfilling of any type of waste lies with the institutions, first and foremost the Region. In this regard, even if he should have done it earlier, Mayor Voce would do well to examine with due attention the new Waste Plan, approved on March 12th by the Council on the proposal of the Regional Council.
It will thus be possible to realize that chapter 32 of the new Waste Plan opens the way to the creation of landfills of all types.
It is more than legitimate to doubt that these changes are functional to the objective of leaving poisons in Crotone, perhaps by authorizing specific landfills for the disposal of those types of waste which up to now have not been possible even in the landfill managed by Overwhelm. The mayor must realize that there is no room for ambiguous positions and playing cards on the skin of the citizens and the city of Crotone is no longer allowed. Many of us members of the Committee “Poisons out. Crotone must live” were convinced supporters and voters of Mayor Voce. They did this to affirm a clear line to defend the city and protect the health of citizens. Unfortunately we felt betrayed by the mayor’s meanderings after he was elected. For this reason – concludes the note – in the face of Eni’s attempt, which was not opposed by the relevant institutions, we created and joined the open and transversal Committee to defend the city. Crotone cannot and must not suffer a deception which would be the death sentence of its future.”
