Livorno 2 May 2024 – Truth about smells, citizens in the square on Saturday
The Livorno Porto Pulito Association invites all citizens to the event that will be held on Saturday 4 May in Piazza Grande, starting from 10.30 am, to loudly demand the “Truth about Smelly Smells”.
The Italian T-shirts, which have been working on this issue for some time, are joining the initiative. The White T-shirts are also pushing to activate the remediation of contaminated soil; soils which could pose further health and environmental risks.
In recent weeks the odors widespread in the air of many neighborhoods of Livorno and Stagno have become unbearable, sparking numerous strong protests on social media. Many citizens have turned to the authorities (Civil Protection Office of the Municipality; Arpat; Fire Brigade) complaining of breathing difficulties and serious discomfort that compromise daily liveability.
No response has been received so far, despite the assurances received in the past, including from the Councilor for the Environment, regarding a so-called “control room” which would bring together the competent authorities and should guarantee transparency and decisive interventions.
Whatever the source of these emissions (the port, the petrochemical complex, etc.) the resident population no longer intends to use their lungs as a filter of substances
pollutants.
We are not just talking about simple “smells”, but about the gaseous emissions and carcinogenic fine particles connected to them.
We remember that in recent months the joint Livorno/Pisa/Collesalvetti Municipal Commission was finally supposed to be held to seriously address the problem. It was canceled at the last moment due to a weather alarm, in our opinion instrumentally.
After the concentration in Piazza Grande, the demonstration will move to Piazza del Municipio and subsequently in front of the Court.
People’s health and lives are more important than anything else and require the protection of all institutions.
