Viareggio policeman dies at 59 Il Tirreno

VIAREGGIO. Police mourn the death of Chief Superintendent Gianluca Rossi. He was 59 years old and was employed by the Viareggio police station. He passed away in his home in Torre del Lago. He had been struggling with an incurable disease for about two years. He leaves behind his wife Beatrice Ferrari, also a policeman at the Viareggio police station, and his daughters Rebecca and Rachele.

During the 2010 police celebration Rossi was awarded a commendation for his work during the train massacre of 29 June 2009 in Viareggio. Gianluca Rossi, originally from Pavia, had been working at the Viareggio police station since 1987, when he first arrived as an associate and where he was hired on a permanent basis.

This is how his colleague Lucio Chelotti, head of the anti-crime unit of which Rossi had also been part, remembers him. “I shared many beautiful years of service with him – recalls Chelotti, now retired – he had been part of the La Spezia Nautical team at the beginning and was added to Viareggio with the divers, even though he wasn’t one, during the Carnival period The experience in the city affected him so much that he decided to stay there, and was assigned to the police station. He was part of the flying squads at the beginning and then moved on to the anti-crime squad. They were years in which we achieved excellent results professionally. thanks also to his work. We lived through the terrible experience of the railway massacre together with the entire police station. We were among the first to intervene in via Ponchielli and then in the months that followed we also had the task of recognizing the victims of friendship that still remains with the families of the victims.”

Among those who worked with him there is also the deputy director of the Commissariat Gerardo Magliulo. “He was a dear person and an exceptional policeman. I can’t find the right words to describe it best. He leaves a deep void. In a very short time we will lose another friend” says Magliulo remembering the agent of the Viareggio police station Mirco Bellone, who died in his sleep at the age of 48.

The funeral carried out by the Ferrante funeral home was held today – Thursday – afternoon in the parish of San Giuseppe in Torre del Lago, packed in every seat, including the Police Commissioner of Lucca Edgardo Giobbi, the director of the Viareggio police station Luigi Larotonda, many colleagues and friends, carabinieri, financiers, municipal agents, a representation of players from the Pumas Viareggio rink hockey team with their coach Mirko Bertolucci, also represented by the CGC with the manager Roberto Puccinelli.
