TRAPANI – Trapani takes to the streets against the identification of the Calatafimi Segesta and Fulgatore sites for the construction of national radioactive waste repositories. Together with mayors, administrators and associations, there were many students who filled Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.

The protest

Among those present were also the regional deputies Safina (Pd) and Ciminnisi (M5s). “A motivated ‘no’ to this wicked hypothesis was reiterated – says Francesco Gruppuso, mayor of Calatafimi Segesta -. We have highlighted that the choices cannot be made from above but, according to the Aarhus Convention which is an international treaty aimed at guaranteeing the public opinion of citizens, through participation from below”.

“Today students and citizens, together with politicians, have widely exercised it – he added -.
The commitment now to send the documents of the municipal councils of Calatafimi Segesta and Trapani, of the 25 mayors and the demonstrations of the people to Sogin and to the Ministry of the Environment. We won’t give up an inch.”

“As the 5 Star Sicily Movement – Ciminnisi recalled – we will work so that the Ars approves the motion so that Trapani and Calatafimi do not become the dustbin of Italy. We are worried about the fact that we have not yet heard an equally decisive ‘no’ from the centre-right majority, nor from the regional government. On the contrary, worrying rumors of willingness to evaluate economic opportunities seem to be coming from authoritative representatives of the area.”

“Ours is a clear and decisive no – highlighted Safina -. Shared today with hundreds of students from Trapani, as well as the mayors and the social and productive forces of the area. Seeing the new generations defend their future makes us even more determined. After Segesta in recent weeks, today it was Trapani’s turn and then elsewhere. We will continue to make our voice heard until Sogin backs down. We will not allow anyone to deface our wonderful land.”

Among those present also the councilor of the Municipality of Trapani Giuseppe Pellegrino: “The choices are also disrespectful of the exclusion criteria. Politics, every political force, must take a position, citizens deserve to know.”
