SPORT – “Women and Sport” project, the long ROAD towards equality

Soroptimist International Club Novara, as part of its activities, has implemented the guidelines of the national project of Soroptimist International Italia, “Women and sport: the long road towards equality”, promoting various initiatives at city level including the next Thursday 9 May.

The value of sport was also recently enshrined in the Italian Constitution with the amendment of September 2023 which reads: “The Republic recognizes the educational, social and promotion value of psychophysical well-being of sporting activity in all its forms”.

Likewise, equality between women and men, a fundamental principle, also needs to be applied in the sporting field and the project by Soroptimist International of Italy aims to make people reflect on the existing gap, addressing issues related to gender equality, equal treatment of men and women, to combat stereotypes and discrimination in both the professional and amateur fields, as well as aspects related to the prevention of violence with an inclusive approach that also considers disability. The objectives of the project are briefly reported

• Support the promotion and signing of the Ethical Charter for Women’s Sport which commits administrations to adopting and developing policies and actions to enhance sports practice;
• Promote the values ​​of sport as an opportunity for integration, education and respect, and the benefits of physical activity in terms of well-being, in particular, but not only, in a gender perspective linked to the different stages of life;
• Raise awareness on the issue of language and the poor presence of female athletes in the media and in decision-making bodies;
• Contribute to a new narrative of sport and its places from a gender perspective, enhancing the stories of female athletes with focuses dedicated to sporting professions;
• Launch, in collaboration with sports associations, prevention projects and campaigns against violence, abuse and harassment.
