Disposal of electronic appliances and equipment decreases in Piedmont: bad Turin – Chivasso Oggi

According to the regional report on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) created by the Coordination Centre WEEE – the body that summarizes the official results achieved by all the Collective Systems that deal with collection at municipal collection centers and collection places organized by the distribution and management of technological waste in Italy – in 2023 Piedmont collected 23,178 tons of WEEE.

Piedmont does worse than the national average

Compared to 2022, the result is down by 5.9%, in line with the trend that emerged at national level (-3.1%). However, the result does not impact the national ranking and the region remains in seventh place.

The same happens for the per capita figure which, with a contraction of 5.9%, falls to 5.44 kg per inhabitant, below the Italian average (5.92 kg/inhabitant), consequently the region slips from thirteenth to fourteenth place in the Italian ranking.

The raccepted by groupings

From the analysis at the level of individual groupings into which WEEE is divided and collected, it emerges that the reduction in regional volumes depends almost exclusively on the significant loss (-34.1%) of TVs and monitors (R3) which however is to be considered physiological on par with the national trend (-32.9%). The drops in cold and climate (R1), which with -2.4% fell to 7,275 tonnes, and in great whites (R2) which marked -2% for a total of 7,520 tonnes, were much more limited.

However, the results of small household appliances and consumer electronics (R4) and light sources (R5) contribute positively to the collection: the former grows by 10.5% for a total of 5,164 tonnes, the latter by +3.8%. for a total of 123 tons.

Collection by province: Turin bad

The contraction in volumes affects almost all the Piedmontese provinces, the only exceptions being those of Vercelli and Biella whose harvests improve respectively by 14.4%, for a total of 1,295 tonnes, and by 6.2% which brings the overall volumes to 755 tons.

The more significant decline he records it there province of Turin whose collection, more than 1,400 tons lower than in 2022 (-12.2%), drops to 10,282 tonnes, nevertheless the province continues to send 44.4% of regional quantities for recycling.

The declines in the remaining provinces are more limited: that of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola loses 5.1% and stands at 1,332 tonnes, that of Alessandria 3.3% for a total of 2,358 tonnes, that of Cuneo 1, 9% for a total of 3,683 tons. The collections of Asti (-0.3%), equal to 1,124 tonnes, and of Novara (-0.1%), equal to 2,349 tonnes, however, were almost stable.

Verbano confirms its primacy

With 8.63 kg/inhabitant (-5.2%), the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola confirms itself once again as first in terms of collection per capita and thirteenth in the Italian ranking. The province of Vercelli consolidates second position with a per capita of 7.80 kg/inhabitant (+14.5%). The growth of the Vercelli provincial collection was especially favored by the result of consumer electronics and small household appliances (R4) which translates into a per capita figure almost two kg higher (+129.4%) compared to the national average value (1.30 kg/inhabitant). Equally virtuous is the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola whose per capita collection in this group is almost double (+95.5%) compared to the national average.

The provinces of Novara and Cuneo follow with a per capita figure of 6.49 kg/inhabitant (-0.2%) and 6.35 kg/inhabitant (-1.9%) respectively. It should be highlighted that the province of Novara is also particularly virtuous in the collection of R4, with almost one kg more per person (+74.7%) compared to the average Italian figure.

All the remaining provinces remain below the national average: Alessandria stops at 5.79 kg/inhabitant (-3.2%) followed by Asti at 5.39 kg/inhabitant (-0.6%) where, however, they collect far fewer washing machines and large whites (R2) than the rest of the country: to be precise, almost one kg less (-42.9%) per head compared to the average Italian figure (2.07 kg/inhabitant). The same can be said for the inhabitants of the province of Turin, whose per capita value drops to 4.66 kg/inhabitant (-12.1%), and of Biella whose per capita value instead rises to 4.44 kg/inhabitant ( +6.2%), but certainly not for the contribution of R2, whose collection is well over one kg per person (-57.4%) lower than the Italian average.

Collection by type of sites

The analysis of regional collection from the point of view of the infrastructure network highlights that just over 80% of regional volumes are collected at municipal collection centers (CdR), the rest at distribution grouping places (LdR).

In reality, that particular incidence of LdR derives almost exclusively from the province of Turin, where almost 42% of electronic waste is delivered by citizens to consumer electronics shops. All or almost all the remaining provinces instead bring all or almost all of their WEEE to the CdR.
