what’s going on with the case

The situation of the former mayor of Turin Piero Fassino becomes complicated after his misadventure at the Fiumicino duty free shop came to light, where he was stopped with a bottle of Chance perfume by Chanel worth 130 euros without having paid for it.

The information from the Fiumicino Police regarding the theft of a perfume by Piero Fassino has been acquired by the Civitavecchia Prosecutor’s Office. Piero Fassino’s name will be entered in the register of suspects of the Civitavecchia Prosecutor’s Office as a necessary guarantee to proceed with the investigations and subsequent deposition of the Piedmontese politician. In the documentation of the case, in addition to the surveillance video, the report contains the testimonies of six store employees who claim that the former minister is responsible for the theft and attempted to steal perfumes from the store twice more. Fassino allegedly tried to steal a perfume while waiting for a flight to Strasbourg. Stopped by the security, he had paid for the package and a second time when the security and the company that manages the duty free had preferred to leave the case alone. Only the third time, on 15 April, Fassino was subjected to a complaint which, however, could still be withdrawn.

Fassino, through his defense lawyer Nicola Gianaria, reiterates that it was a misunderstanding, that he intended to pay, that he had his hands full so he would have acted clumsily by putting the perfume in his pocket without the intention of stealing.

Matteo Renzi commented on the case: “I don’t do trials in the newspapers. But if things really are as they are told, I believe that Piero Fassino must be helped by someone who loves him. Because I’m very worried about him, he’s not the Piero Fassino we knew.”

Piero Fassino, who is 75 years old, was Minister of Justice between 2000 and 2001, mayor of Turin between 2011 and 2016, deputy between 1994 and 2011, and then again from 2018.
