Safety at work is not a cost or a luxury, but a duty: no one can opt out of the commitment to make work safer, just as no one can really give up on the idea that someone leaves in the morning to go to work and doesn’t come back. more at home”.

Words of the dem group leader in the city council of Cuneo, Claudia Carliwhich yesterday evening (Tuesday 30 April) presented the agenda focused on the topic to the city assembly – without, however, the entire minority force.

Carli: “Don’t call them ‘white deaths’”

Calling them ‘white deaths’ implies that there is no responsibility, or that these dead are faceless or historyless, people of minor importance – added Carli – . When instead they are a symptom of an endemic problem at a national level: we still mourn many, too many, who fell while carrying out their work with commitment and seriousness but without the right safety”.

Carli underlined how the province of Cuneo, in Piedmont, is second in terms of incidence of the phenomenon after that of Turin: “Losing your life or becoming disabled while exercising any right is unacceptable – he said – . Safety at work is a real problem made up of non-isolated and disconnected cases and which mainly affect women, migrants and precarious workers. The absence of rules and tools are the causes that deserve our full attention, as well as the safety standards reduced, also, by the rush to subcontracting”.

We ask the Council to act as spokesperson with the government to strengthen controls in order to guarantee effective compliance with the standards. The Region should then set up a desk available to workers for reporting on the subject” concluded Carli.

Pmore controls and less “unbridled subcontracting”

The Italian Republic is founded on work, of course, but it must give you a living and at least not kill you – added the councilor Flavia Barbano (Centre for Cuneo) – . Deaths at work are a social and human drama whose solution must be of primary importance for institutions, industry and the entire country. Enough with foolish behavior, subcontracting with low-cost tenders which are an indescribable shame and the lack of culture of prevention: the rules exist, we need to learn to respect them and not just interpret them”.

Of the same opinion Antonino Pittari (Mixed majority group), who added: “The number of labor inspectors, and their especially economic motivation, are among the central points of the topic”.

Carlo Garavagno (PD) responded to Barbano underlining how “the territory is very attentive to the topic of prevention and information, especially towards younger people: in the Cuneo area, eight thousand hours of training have already been provided for around two thousand students”.

Approval with the unanimity of those present

At the end of the debate, the mayor also spoke Patrizia Manassero: “May 1st is an important date for our country and I will celebrate it by taking part in the traditional trade union demonstration, to which I will bring our contribution. The issue of workplace safety is truly important and sincerely serious, and deserves to be addressed with good policies”.

The agenda was approved unanimously by those present.
