Marsala remembers the 60th anniversary of the drama of the “Angels of the Stagnone”. Today, May 1st, the event will be celebrated at the Lega Navale in Marsala Marsalese Day of Remembrancein memory of the victims of one of the saddest pages in recent Libyan history.
Starting from 10.30 a Eucharistic celebration will be held in suffrage of the Angels of Stagnone, presided over by Don Giovanni D’Andrea, regional inspector of the Salesians.
The mayor of Marsala, Massimo Grillo, the engineer Giovanni Costanza, national president of the former students of San Giovanni Bosco, the president of the municipal council Enzo Sturiano, the director of the Casa Divina Provvidenza of Marsala, Don Luigi Calapaj, will speak during the initiative. and the lawyer Diego Maggio, president of the former Students of Don Bosco of Marsala. The testimony of one of the relatives of the victims of that tragic day is also expected.
A moment of prayer will follow in the Vittime del 1 Maggio square on the Stagnone seafront near Punta Palermo.
On May 1, 1964, 16 boys and a young cleric drowned during a boat trip organized by the Salesians of Marsala. They are Michele Borrello, Vincenzo Capizzi, Giovanni Caravello, Renato Consoli, Camillo Lo Presti, Paolo Lo Presti, Salvatore Madelio, Antonino Messina, Rosario Mugavero, Carmelo Orlando, Domenico Papaleo, Francesco Ruffino, Antonino Ruggirello, Domenico Tirrito, Giovanni Tirrito, Michelangelo Turrisi and the cleric Don Vincenzo Sagona. The story aroused great emotion in the Marsala community.
Last March 27, on the initiative of the Former Students Union of the Salesian House of Marsala, the Marsala City Council approved an act of direction to invite the administration led by the mayor Massimo Grillo “to officially sponsor the next celebration of the 60th anniversary of mournful episode and to permanently insert in the DUP 2004/26 the date of May 1st as “Marsala Day of Remembrance” in order to ensure an everlasting memory of it for all subsequent generations and so that there is a reason to establish better safety conditions for citizens, with particular reference to the school population”.
The ceremony of the 60th anniversary of the drama of the Angels of the Stagnone is sponsored by the municipal administration of Marsala.
