Urgent intervention required for safety at work in Umbria

Urgent intervention required – Simona Meloni, group leader of Democratic Party in the Regional Council of Umbria, has raised serious concerns about safety in the region’s workplaces, stimulated by the disconcerting data reported in the recent Inail annual report. According to this report, 1,041 fatal crashes were recorded nationwide in 2023, with an average of three deaths each day. In Umbria, there were 10,715 injury reports in 2022 alone, of which 23 resulted in death.

Meloni highlighted one correlation between job insecurity, lack of adequate training and the increase in accidents and deaths at work. She highlighted how job deskilling and the erosion of workers’ rights contribute to a less safe working environment, especially for older workers who are subject to greater risks due to fatigue and increasing workload.

He drew attention to the “Pact for health, safety and environment in the workplace of Umbria”, a trade union initiative which includes 18 concrete proposals to improve safety at work. These proposals include increasing the frequency of checks in the workplace, strengthening the staffing of safety bodies, and the creation of new tools and resources, such as an online observatory to monitor and prevent workplace accidents.

Meloni also cited good examples practices from other regions, such as Emilia Romagna and Tuscany, where innovative projects for prevention and safety at work have been implemented. He proposed that similar initiatives be adopted also in Umbria, with the creation of a regional portal and the establishment of a regional investment fund dedicated to safety in the workplace.

In conclusion, Meloni appealed to the Council regional to take a clear and decisive position regarding the unions’ requests, establishing measures that guarantee a safe and healthy working environment. He underlined the need for a concrete commitment involving all actors in the field of workplace safety to promote effective and lasting synergies.
