Even the unpleasant Fassino deserves respect

By Fabio Massa

I have no sympathy for Piero Fassino. I interviewed him, when I was very young, when he was secretary of the DS. At the end of the public interview he didn’t even shake my hand, cold and contemptuous in every pore of him. Therefore, I have no reason to doubt that yes, he may have told the airport clerks “he doesn’t know who I am”. Having said all this, human understanding springs from me when I learn that he is suffering from kleptomania, and in any case that he is the victim of a media pillory made up of memes, teasing, complete ruin of his public and private reputation. Try to think about what he means. No longer being judged for what one is, or has been, on one’s political ideas, on one’s proposals, even on one’s physical characteristics, or on one’s education or rudeness (in the case that concerns me, pure rudeness), or on one’s humility or arrogance. In short, being judged on what we are, a mix of good and evil, beautiful and ugly. No, Fassino is on the cross due to his weakness. Fassino is on the cross in accordance with the saying that all politicians are thieves, and when they are innocent, as in this case, they automatically become guilty. Is Fassino a piece of shit? Yes, absolutely. Is it funny that a person hurts their foot while walking and ends up with their face against a pole, like a comedy film? Yes. And if that person had a disability would we laugh? Maybe not. Well, perhaps Fassino’s shitty figure shouldn’t be laughed at, at least in this case. Having said that, my sympathy for him is unchanged, and therefore absent.
