The news relating to the report by the police of the local Company of Mazara del Vallo of a 35-year-old from Mazara found in possession of an expensive mountain bike which had been stolen a few days earlier (the bicycle was later returned to the rightful owner) has brought the problem of theft to the surface again in the city. In fact, at the same time, two 23-year-olds, also residents of the city, were reported, stopped outside a supermarket while they were busy removing food hidden on their clothes.

A few months ago many citizens had reported the presence of a group, often made up of two people but certainly with a “baseman”, who stopped in front of shops in the city center on bicycles and after throwing a stone shattering the windows of entrance (on the right in the cover collage photo you can see a still image of a video that went viral on social media); the criminals then ran away with the stolen goods. The events occurred at night and in some cases the thieves themselves didn’t even bother to threaten passers-by or residents.

Cases of petty crime are often linked to another social plague, that of drugs, which has become increasingly rampant in recent years, exacerbated by the spread of crack among young people who have often been protagonists in recent times of various episodes of violence which have characterized the city’s nightlife . Petty crime seems to have diminished in recent months. In fact, the police would have identified criminals thanks to private but also municipal video surveillance systems.

Speaking of municipal video surveillance, we recently learned that in order to enhance security in the city, an operations room has been created at the Municipal Police Headquarters where 139 sites, especially in the historic center, can be monitored through the cameras. The Administration’s objective, in synergy with the police, is to extend control to another 29 sites in other parts of the City, which are critical points of the City. Added to these are mobile cameras to combat waste abandonment.
