(ANSA) – FIASTRA, APR 30 – There is a small Grand Canyon in the heart of Italy and the Sibillini Mountains. It is located in the Marche region, in the municipality of Fiastra (Macerata) and is called Lame Rosse. A formation of gravel and rock, at times similar to pyramids, with pinnacles and towers that stand out into the sky. Clay and silt hold together this authentic spectacle of nature, which ANSA reached at the end of a challenging path that leads from Lake Fiastra up to an altitude of 860 meters above sea level, when at the end of a hard climb the Blades open wide at the sight of the hikers.
Every day, many people set off along the route of over three kilometers to reach the canyon. The path passes through a wonderful forest, colored by cyclamens. It is accessible to everyone, even though it is characterized by ups and downs with some particularly tiring slopes when going up and treacherous when going back down, you should tackle it with suitable shoes and equipped with a water bottle. Once in the shadow of the reddish canyon – a color given by the abundant presence of iron – fatigue gives way to amazement. It seems almost impossible that among the green mountains of the Umbria-Marche Apennines there could be this authentic naturalistic jewel, shaped by time, by the wind and in general by the atmospheric agents which over the millennia have eroded the first limestone layer, shattering it so as to give rise to what they call scree here, which is found at the foot of the Lame. Close to the canyon other paths branch off up the mountains, but many are closed or particularly dangerous due to collapses caused by the 2016 earthquakes and hikers are advised to carefully avoid them.
