BRINDISI – The inconvenience caused by road construction sites is a daily plague for citizens who travel by car. What creates discontent is above all the conditions of degradation in which the roads are often left after the excavations have been covered. This inefficiency will be overcome thanks to a protocol signed between the municipal administration and Enel. The councilor for Public Works of the Municipality of Brindisi, Gianluca Quarta, spoke about it during a session of the council commission chaired by Raffaele De Maria, which took place this morning (Tuesday 30 April), also in the presence of the municipal surveyor Ettore Scivales . The meeting was livened up by a controversy between the councilor and the former mayor Riccardo Rossi.
The protocol with Enel
Quarta explained that renovation work on the cable ducts has been underway for weeks. This is an intervention aimed at avoiding the problem of blackouts, which are especially frequent in summer. The works were financed through the Pnrr tender for the reconstruction of electricity lines and cabins. Once the construction site is completed, Enel will have to take charge of the restyling of the road section involved, with the exception of the paving stones. “Within six months of the construction site – says Quarta – the renovation works must also be completed”. Secondly, the works to improve the water pipes will begin by the Apulian Aqueduct.
“Many interventions for the improvement of the city – declares the councilor – are in place and create natural inefficiencies which will then produce benefits over time”. Another issue raised in the commission is that of checking the correct execution of the works, “I asked for greater commitment – continues Quara – from the offices. The predisposition phase does not allow us to hire new staff. We are at reduced ranks in all sectors, from public works to urban planning. We are asking you to be more careful.”
Cannalire: “Minimum safety conditions must be respected”
The leader of the Democratic Party, Francesco Cannalire, says he is in favor of modernization works to improve the city’s infrastructure, “but we believe – he states – that all this must be done respecting the minimum safety conditions and above all having common sense”. “The massive interventions that are underway in the city, and especially in the historic center – declares Cannalire – are creating numerous inconveniences to traffic and risk creating dangers to pedestrian and vehicular traffic”.
“In this regard – continues the municipal councilor – we have asked the municipal administration to urgently intervene with its technicians to evaluate any critical situations, and activate all the foreseen procedures aimed at protecting public safety, and if necessary, also through application of sanctions to companies carrying out the works”.
The controversy with the former mayor
The session, as mentioned, was animated by a controversy triggered by Riccardo Rossi. The latter read a Facebook post in which Quarta, about a year ago, in the role of opposition councilor, criticized the administration at the time led by Mayor Rossi, precisely for the disruption caused by road construction. “Given that he has bombarded us with hundreds of messages and the situation has worsened – claims Rossi – either he solves the problems or resigns”. Accused of “political inability” to manage the problems, Quarta replies: “Remediating five years of problems is not easy, but we are working hard.”
President De Maria censures what in his opinion are “personal attacks” made to the councilor, but Rossi underlines that the controversy concerns purely political issues. Then Cannalire also intervenes. “Quarta cannot be offended,” he states, “if someone points out to him that for five years, perhaps, he has exasperated his role as opposition councilor. He cannot argue that the administration has already achieved results. He should not be offended if someone raises controversy about his political work.”
