NEW TORANO. A beautiful specimen of female badger was released yesterday afternoon in the municipality of Torano Nuovo. The animal was found on April 23 by a citizen on the side of the road, again in the Torano area, suffering from serious convulsions. The badger, rescued by the technical operators of the Animal Health Veterinary Service, was examined by the veterinary doctors of the service, which is part of the Prevention Department. Veterinarians diagnosed a state of intoxication from probable pesticides or herbicides. The animal was treated pharmacologically and hospitalized for the time necessary for its full recovery until its release on April 29th. The yew is a protected species, an unavailable heritage of the State.
On average, the animal health veterinary service takes care of between one hundred and 150 injured wild animals per year, including roe deer, foxes, porcupines and birds of prey. Some, the most serious cases, are sent to the Cras in Pescara, the wildlife recovery centre.
