An opportunity to network the artistic realities of the area with a shared project capable of launching Catanzaro’s candidacy as Italian capital of contemporary art. With this objective, the working group was established in Palazzo de Nobili, promoted on the initiative of the mayor Nicola Fiorita, which brings together the main public and private institutions linked to the particular artistic segment, with the commitment made to define and propose participation of the regional capital to the ministerial announcement.
Responding were the president of the Province, Amedeo Mormile, the director of the Academy of Fine Arts, Virgilio Piccari, the president of the Order of Architects, Eros Corapi, with the delegated councilor Francesco Zangara, the director of the Mudiac-Diffuse Museum of contemporary art, Matteo Sainato, Vincenzo Costantino di Altrove, the representatives of the Eos Sud cultural association. Also in connection were the leaders of the Mimmo Rotella Foundation, which manages the Casa della Memoria of the Catanzaro master in the heart of the historic centre, and the councilor to Culture Donatella Monteverdi. Furthermore, Michele Traversa and Maurizio Rubino responded enthusiastically to this first meeting, precursors of the golden period of “Intersezioni” – then continued by Wanda Ferro – the contemporary art exhibition that characterized the Scolacium Park and which left a permanent sign thanks to the sculptures, signed by internationally renowned authors, present at the Biodiversity Park.
“I can only express my satisfaction in registering the interest and attention of the subjects who, in various capacities, have contributed in the past, and continue to do so today, to promote Catanzaro as a city dedicated to contemporary art”, he comments the mayor Nicola Fiorita.
“The national competition that will decree the Italian “Capital” of this important expressive form – awarding one million euros to the winning project – therefore represents a precious opportunity to bring together our best resources, make them dialogue and enhance them on a national scale . Beyond the results of the tender, the shared intent is to start from a consolidated heritage of works and containers to give it new impetus in a glocal key, combining memory with innovation and aiming to make contemporary art a tool for redevelopment and urban regeneration”.
The working group has therefore determined to identify a smaller control room which will quickly formulate a proposal for activities to be placed at the center of the candidacy. “In a united and convinced manner – concludes the mayor – we have entrusted Michele Traversa with the role of coordinator of this broad path which, I hope, will be able to produce the desired fruits and outline the start of a new and exciting season of artistic and cultural production , driving the idea of the Greater Catanzaro”.
