Monza. Brianza was shaken by tragic news: the 42-year-old construction worker, of Egyptian origin, involved in a serious accident at work on April 24th, lost his life. A piece of iron, detached from a crane, hit the man, who did not make it despite desperate attempts to save him. He worked on the construction site in via Giacosa in Monza, in the Cederna district, and was registered with the Fillea Cgilthe union that protects workers in the construction sector.

The news unleashed a wave of grief and outrage in the community, with the CGIL which immediately mobilized to offer support to the man’s family. “We are close to his family, who just last week arrived in Italy to reunite with him,” he declared Federica Cattaneo of the secretariat of the CGIL Brianza.

CGIL: WE WILL NO LONGER BE ABLE TO ANSWER “ZERO DEATHS AT WORK” IN BRIANZA

Federica Cattaneo stressed that this tragedy was not caused by bad luck, but by a system that puts profit before worker safety. “The construction site in via Giacosa is an example of how widespread the phenomenon of contracts and subcontracts is, where companies try to maximize profits to the detriment of worker safety”, he has declared.

The investigations are ongoing, but there is already a need to reform the procurement and subcontracting system to ensure greater safety in the workplace. The CGIL has started a campaign to collect signatures and ask for the abolition of the rule which excludes joint liability of client companies in the event of accidents at work.

“The Protocol for legality and safety on construction sites, both public and private, renewed in February with the Municipality of Vimercate has proven to be an excellent tool for combating illegality and preventing accidents – concludes the secretary of the CGIL in Brianza –, we want to propose it to all the municipalities in our province. In the Vimercate area the municipal administration, the local police and the trade unions have built a system of relationships and actions that has allowed great results to be achieved”.
