From 11 May to 6 July, the Castelli Romani will host the great international dance for the fifth edition of Paesaggi del Corpo International Contemporary Dance Festival, with shows, site-specific and outdoor urban dance performances, workshops, residencies curated by Italian companies, international formations and young authors.
With the artistic direction of Patrizia Cavola, the festival has expanded its boundaries since 2024 by connecting three municipalities of the Castelli Romani: the activities will take place in Velletri (RM) at the Teatro Artemisio Gian Maria Volonté, the House of Cultures and Music and in Piazza Cairoli, in Rocca di Papa (RM) at the Civic Theater and in Albano Laziale (RM), at the Civic Museum and the Cisternoni, places chosen to enhance the cultural heritage of the cities. While the artistic residencies and workshops enliven the spaces of La Scatola dell’Arte di Roma, headquarters of the cultural association, and the local dance schools.
The program of this new edition of Paesaggi del Corpo, entitled Intrecci, includes 33 shows presented in 36 performances by 22 of the most important Italian companies: Artemis Danza, Fabrizio Favale/KLM Le Supplici, Btt Balletto Teatro Di Torino, Compagnia Atacama, Company Blu, Egribiancodanza, Dancehauspiù Company, Naturalis Labor, Arb Dance Company, Art Garage, Asmed Balletto Di Sardegna, Borderlinedanza, Compagnia Hunt, CIA Francesca Selva/Concorda Impresa Sociale, Dèjà Donnè, Ersilia Danza, Kinesis Cdc, Mandala Dance Company, Motus , Movimento Danza, Res Extensa, Gruppo E-Motion; and international groups such as Cie Irene K (Belgium), Taiat Dansa (Spain), Tanz Harz (Germany).
Ample space also for the new generations of authors (Livia Bartolucci, Noemi Piva, Nicholas Baffoni, Camilla Perugini, Antonio Taurino) who will be guests of this fifth edition, a choice aimed at valorising emerging creation in comparison with mature artists and above all in favor of a generational change.
The festival will be opened by Fabrizio Favale, a choreographer whose works have been invited to important international contexts, on stage with Danze Americane, a work selected at NID – Platform 2023, choreographic sequences which, by interweaving past and present techniques, evolve towards new structures and new landscapes. Also new is the reading that Borderlinedanza presents of the Shakespearean tragedy Romeo and Juliet, a co-production between the Festival and the Campania company, in which love becomes a youthful challenge and suicide no longer concerns the protagonists and their earthly life, but their feelings .
The subtitle Innovation dances to the rhythm of beer perfectly describes the intent of the Sonic Hops performance by the Egribiancodanza Company which brings different languages to the stage by fusing them into mini-compositions taken from sounds recorded in the production and consumption phases of a craft beer, on which creates a choreographic improvisation traced by sensors that interact in real time, modifying, filtering and mixing the sounds themselves in order to flow from fixed and solid devices towards more ethereal and intangible realities. The Intrecci theme runs through the works that investigate human relationships such as Sista by Balletto Teatro di Torino which focuses on the complicity between two excellent performers, one of them Marta Ciappina winner of the Ubu Award as Best actress/performer in 2023. Le regard que je garde pour moi by Cie Irene K site-specific dance performance that underlines the festival’s desire to unite artists, works, places and communities. The show TESTADILEGNO by ErsiliaDanza is dedicated to children: the fairy tale of Pinocchio is reinterpreted by combining acting with choreographic gestures in a dialogue between dance and literature.
The multidisciplinary trait that has always characterized the festival will be well represented precisely by the meeting of dance with the other arts – poetry, literature, visual arts – as in the new production of the Atacama Lost Solos Company, co-produced by the festival, which, inspired by the wrong migratory route of solitary birds outside the flock to which they belong gives substance to the creation of solos for different dancers in a context of intersection of the arts, combining the elaboration of physical dance/poetry with a pictorial and visionary work of construction of images, with the use of the word and sound.
With the aim of supporting artistic creation, the program includes Artistic Residencies at La Scatola dell’Arte in Rome. Among the other organized cultural activities aimed at educating the public, the program includes the implementation of special multidisciplinary projects and laboratory courses for in-depth study and knowledge of the language of the movement aimed at young people and schools in the area.
Open and free to the public, masterclasses will be organized with the scheduled choreographers and dancers: a concrete and experiential opportunity to understand the poetics and languages of the authors, with the aim of creating a deep and rooted artist/audience relationship.
Dance System continues, a project that involves the creation of conferences, round tables and debates around Contemporary Dance in Italy and abroad. Thanks to the precious contribution of academics, journalists and operators expert in the dance arts, Dance System will constitute a meeting and discussion tool between professionals, Italian and foreign choreographers hosted at Paesaggi del Corpo and the public of enthusiasts of the performing arts.
The Paesaggi del Corpo festival is organized by the cultural association La Scatola dell’Arte ETS with the contribution of MIC Ministry of Culture, of the Municipality of Albano, in collaboration with FONDARC Fondazione di Partecipazione Arte e Cultura Città di Velletri, in collaboration and with the patronage of the Municipality of Velletri and the Municipality of Rocca di Papa.
