Centenarians in the province of Cremona: 9 out of 10 are women

Last April 22nd, Lucia Ronda celebrated her 110th birthday, probably the longest-lived Cremonese (Casalasca), currently residing in the Pavia area, in the Marcignago RSA, a woman of exceptional character who also knew how to defeat Covid from which she was struck in 2020, with a career as an artist behind him in contact with the cultural elite of the twentieth century in the Po Valley.

However, she is not the only one to have achieved such an important milestone. Keeping her virtually company are the 136 centenarians registered by Istat, residing in the province of Cremona, as of 1 January 2024. They are the so-called “great elderly”, but it would be better to say “the” centenarians, since in 86.8% of cases are women, 118, compared to only 18 men, only 13.2% of the total. In short, 9 women over one hundred years old for every man.
A very widespread presence in the Cremona area, if we consider that there is at least one centenarian in 55 of the 113 municipalities of the Province.

Cremona is obviously in the foreground, with 34 centenarians, 32 women and 2 men, with four other municipalities where there are at least 3 “great elderly people”. Crema with 15 centenarians (13 females and 2 males) precedes Casalmaggiore (7), Soncino (4), Agnadello and Castellone (3). In all these municipalities the over centenarians are only women.
