The operation falls within the so-called Neptune Project, designed in 2020, the objective of which is to provide models for emergency and defensive operations. This is an activity planned for some time, conducted in compliance with international laws and standards. All these efforts are of nature defensive and are not directed towards third parties. They are not related to any current geopolitical events, even if they remain in the background Ukrainian crisis and the tension in Middle East with the Hamas-Israel conflict.

As part of the exercise, the Italian destroyer Andrea Doria, one of the most modern vessels of the Italian Navy, will conduct a training of defense aerial in the sea south of Taranto, in Puglia, probably also with firearms. In addition to Italy, they also participate USA, Great Britain, Spain, Greece, France, Poland, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden, Albania and Germany. The main objectives of the NEST are the maintenance of freedom of navigation and manoeuvreto protect strategic maritime points, but also the possibility of exercising supervision and increasing interoperability (e.g. air-ground integration) to advance NATO’s capabilities to lead multilateral operations. During the exercise, maritime units will operate throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic, but air units will fly around Europe to conduct live fire in Baltic Sea. “Multi-domain operations” encompass all interconnected maritime, air, land, space and cyber activities with the aim of leveraging them for battlefield advantage.
