Rimini Porta Galliana, restoration completed – The Piazza

Rimini Porta Galliana, the conservative restoration of the ancient jewel of the city has been completed. The system to protect against possible flooding has also been upgraded, and information totems that tell its story will soon be positioned.

That of Porta Galliana is in fact a precious history, a monumental testimony to the evolution of the city over the centuries. Porta Galliana is the only medieval city gate still intact and partly visible (with the exception of the Gattolo gate, visible from inside Castel Sismondo). Built in the thirteenth century to connect the city with the port area along the Marecchia river, it was part of the defensive walls due to the expansion of the city in the Frederick era (13th century). In the 15th century it was restored by Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, while in the 16th century it was closed and replaced with a tower.

Returned to the people of Rimini in the fullness of its beauty already in April two years ago at the end of a complex intervention to valorise the archaeological area, in recent months the ancient medieval gate has been at the center of further interventions, designed and built under the high supervision of the competent Superintendence of Archeology and Fine Arts. The works were designed with the aim of perfecting the conservative restoration already carried out by further protecting the brick walls of the Gate and intervening on the surfaces that remained in contact with the ground during the centuries in which the monument remained buried.

Alongside the restoration work, work was completed on the existing sewage system with the installation of a second electric pump for lifting water (rainwater and groundwater), to aid the existing one, to guarantee its total efficiency in the event of extreme weather events. which could give rise to flooding.

The intervention, carried out by COCER Costruzioni supported by the specialized company AD Arte, will be completed in the next few weeks with the positioning on the site of some descriptive totems, currently being approved by the Superintendency, which will tell passers-by and visitors the history of the Gate and the interventions that have taken place over the years up to today to restore and enhance it.
