“We are convinced that the problems of daily coexistence among the community of young people between 18 and 24 years old – in other words the students – residents in the metropolitan city of Bologna and equivalent, in terms of number, to the share of university students enrolled at the Bologna branch of the Alma Mater, must also be addressed by establishing a relationship between the City and the University that restores the intensity with which it was expressed along most of the over nine centuries of common history”. This is the incipit of the document presented at today’s meeting between the rector Giovanni Molari, the mayor Matteo Lepore and the Coordination of the Associations and Committees of the Historic Center which denounce the inconveniences encountered in “coexistence” with students who need to “set up a joint action agreement between the City and the University”.

Behaviors “which also appear to be detrimental to the image and decorum of the University itself” we read in the text of the Coordination which proposes an agreement to “manage, prevent and, where necessary, sanction behaviors that are most detrimental to decorum, hygiene, health and of civil coexistence and quality of life in the university area and in the squares and streets where the student population acts”, such as Piazza Scaravilli whose management “is the responsibility and burden of the University itself” and where several reports arrive.

Events and graduation parties in the street

The historic center committees are asking for more spaces at the university for cultural meetings, artistic events and activities. And then there are the degrees. Street celebrations would be “unseemly” due to their negative environmental impact. In particular, also due to the massive scattering of plastic confetti harmful to the city sewerage system, the throwing of eggs and flour and the smearing with other materials that cause damage and dirt. They are not tolerable for the image and decorum of the City”, we read.

“University courtyards open as early as this summer”

The University of Bologna is committed to working on the “management and organization of degrees”, declared the rector at the end of the meeting: “There are aspects of public order which obviously do not concern the University – observes Molari and on the possibility of opening the Alma Mater premises even in the evening – we have a lot of work at the moment and even the management of our spaces is not very simple, but we have opened the courtyards of Palazzo Poggi, there are benches and people frequent them the better.”

On the part of the administration, two working groups which will also see the “active involvement” of the president of the Santo Stefano district, Rosa Amorevole, to carry forward the focus on Piazza Aldrovandi and Via Belle Arti. With the rector and the committees, it will be established, furthermore, “a working group dedicated to the management of Piazza Scaravilli and the university courtyards which will be open as early as this summer”, says the Municipality.
