A 26-year-old carabiniere, originally from Palermo, died in a collision between a car and a truck along the A20 Palermo-Messina motorway. The young Army soldier was traveling alone at the wheel of his own car. The accident occurred in the early afternoon of today, April 29, in the stretch between Brolo and Rocca di Caprileone, towards Palermo.

For reasons still under investigation, the carabiniere’s vehicle collided with an articulated lorry that preceded it inside the Cipolla tunnel, a few hundred meters after the Brolo motorway junction, in a stretch where there are works, with narrowing of the roadway. For the young man the impact was fatal.

The driver of the heavy vehicle, in an understandable state of shock, was unharmed and transferred to the Sant’Agata Militello hospital for further investigations. The traffic police of the Santagata detachment, the firefighters, the 118 ambulances, the motorway emergency response vehicles and the CAS and a patrol of the Patti carabinieri were on site.

The prosecutor on duty of the Patti prosecutor’s office, Giovanna Lombardo, after the medical-legal assessment and the completion of the findings, in the evening authorized the removal of the body and the transfer to the Papardo hospital in Messina for the autopsy, which will be performed in the next few days by Professor Daniela Sapienza.

Motorway transit between the Brolo and Rocca di Capri Leone junctions, towards Palermo, is closed.
