“Yes, I think it was the victory of maturity, because the boys were good. It wasn’t easy to find space with Sampdoria defending very low with all their men. It wasn’t easy to find any openings. And I must say that they were very good at being patient, at looking for the right space to attack. When you find these teams closing down, dead balls can be a factor. By now, we’re starting to score a lot of goals from inactive balls, and it’s another satisfaction for me and my staff, because we work on it. And the boys are extremely receptive, because they manage to bring these notions back to the pitch, and today they directed us towards a match that was difficult, in terms of how Sampdoria was interpreting it. Today, I really liked everything and I liked a lot of the guys, because there were few technical errors: we missed two or three balls in the first half, where we had to continue playing in search of space to attack the last line. However, in the second half the errors were completely eliminated: they were good at re-aggressions, they were very careful and effective in preventive marking. We attacked with great continuity without conceding anything except a few free kicks. There is satisfaction, because it is yet another performance that brings us a positive result and this is the right path.”
Maybe a little more speed was needed to try to undermine that wall erected by Sampdoria?
“Yes, we could have been faster, but there was also the problem of the pitch being a bit slow, and it was very hot. It wasn’t easy. I think the team has always played with few touches. The only flaw – where we could have done better – is that, when we had the ball open to attack their defensive line, the players further away could push it much more, instead of always asking for the ball and then trying to go inside with triangulations . Also because we had to be good at expanding those spaces between the defense and their midfield. Maybe we could have done something more there. However, Sampdoria defended very low and it was absolutely not easy.”
