May Day at the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto

TARANTO – Art and history can also be hidden behind small signs engraved on a tomb inscription or even on a discarded shard from an ancient ceramists’ workshop from the Greek era.

This is how the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto decides to honor the day dedicated to May Day Workers’ Day.

In fact, on Wednesday 1 May, at 11.00 a thematic visit entitled “Homo faber: crafts and knowledge of ancient Taranto” is scheduled.

During the journey inside the MArTA exhibition rooms, the museum staff will lead visitors along the traces of sometimes imperceptible signals which instead reveal a lot about the world of work in the civilizations of the past.

The epigraphic attestations and work tools found in the tombs or carved on funerary steles testify to the work in the agricultural, artisanal, commercial or exploitation of marine resources sectors.

As well as the small portrait drawn on a firing test inside an ancient artisan workshop from the Greek era.

The illustration of the finds resulting from the skilled skills of ceramists, metallurgists and goldsmiths will highlight the technological innovations and production capabilities developed over time from prehistory to the medieval age.

A starting point for reflection on the social framework of ancient Taranto – states the director of MArTA, Stella Falzone – which allows us to reconstruct moments of daily life, from work in the fields to trade, from artisanal production to writing, proving the extreme capacity of “know-how” of the city’s inhabitants in different historical eras.

The thematic visit, lasting approximately an hour and a half and for a maximum of 25 people, must be booked by calling the number: 0994532112. The activity is included in the entrance ticket to the museum at a cost of 10 euros, except for free or the reductions provided for by law and agreements.

On Wednesday 1st May it will also be possible to book paid guided tour activities by the Aditus company, concessionaire for the added services of MArTA. To purchase entrance tickets or purchase further guided tours, you can consult the website www.museotaranto.cultura.gov.it and access the “Ticket Office” area.
