It is a mix of indignation and fear that has arisen in a part of the community in the last few hours Pignataro Maggiorewhich for a few hours has been home to the two pit bulls that ad Eboli they mauled the little boy Francesco Pio D’Amarojust 13 months old. Toto And Pablo these are the names of the two dogs that were in fact transferred to the “Dog’s Town”, a kennel located in the Pignataro area close to the Casilina. This is the center responsible for hosting the strays of the Salerno municipality and they are now regularly subjected to medical and administrative seizure by the ASL and the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Salerno. Yet it was enough to make dozens of residents, owners of four-legged friends or simple runners scared for their safety, jump out of their chairs.

“We don’t want those dangerous animals in our municipality, mostly in a kennel where we also bring our dogs,” attacks a resident, interpreting a sentiment common to other citizens. Others, however, fear the dangers of the two pit bulls.

“One of the favorite streets for joggers is not far from the kennel, anything could happen”, says a runner expressing concern. The mayor is trying to bring serenity back to the town Giorgio Magliocca who, noting an “excessive concern” of a part of the population, tries to calm things down: “The structure is very far from the town center and in any case well fenced”.

Furthermore, according to the protocol, Totò and Pablo will remain under observation for ten days: if rabies is detected or if a proven dangerousness is assessed by the veterinarians, they will be immediately put down. In short, there would be no alarms on the horizon. But controversy is already erupting precisely over the hypothesis of euthanasia for dogs.

Enrico Rizzi, candidate in the next European Parliament elections also in the southern Italian constituency (Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Puglia, Basilicata and Calabria) and animal rights activist, intervened explaining: «The tragedy must not make the sense of responsibility disappear . Word is starting to spread about the euthanasia of the two pit bulls, a fact which I will oppose by starting to distrust anyone who promotes a cruel initiative. There is no type of aggressive dog, it depends on how they are trained.”

Meanwhile, the Salerno Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the rescue efforts for little Francesco Pio, who were alerted about 30 minutes after the attack.
