events not to be missed

Wednesday 1 May in Bologna: a roundup of events to participate in on the day in which workers are celebrated. Here they are. We inevitably start with the May Day concert in Piazza Maggiore. A live event organized by the local branches of CGIL, CISL and UIL with the artistic direction of Arci Bologna which returns to enliven the most important square in Bologna for a day of music and sociality entirely dedicated to Labor Day. During the day, from 4pm to midnight, local artists will perform on the stage in Piazza Maggiore together with well-known names in the Italian and international music scene: big and emerging artists will alternate in a varied and dynamic line-up! Among the most anticipated names of this year’s edition we highlight: the leader of the Kings of Convenience Erlend Øye & La Comitiva, Giovanni Truppi + Band vs Sibode Dj, together on stage for a double performance outside the box, the Bolognese Rumba de Bodas , the young revelation of the Italian rap scene Ele A, the rapper Egreen, the underground hip hop collective Triflow, the reggae singer Lion D.

In the days leading up to May 1st, Succede solo a Bologna offers two new free shows at the Teatro Mazzacorati 1763 in Bologna (via Toscana 19). The winners of the TOSCA 2023 opera competition, talented young voices from Italian conservatories and musical academies, will perform on the Mazzacorati stage on Monday 29 April at 8.30pm. On this occasion the young artists will compete, accompanied on the piano by Giovana Ceranto, in some arias taken from famous operas, such as Rigoletto, La Traviata and Le nozze di Figaro. On Wednesday 1 May, again at 8.30pm, the concert-show “Cabaret a red lights” is scheduled, which explores the world and repertoire of early twentieth century cabaret. A journey to rediscover the historical value of cabarets: not only places of entertainment, but also bastions of free expression in which great artists, musicians and writers could freely express their art. The duo composed of the voice of Clara La Licata and Matilde Bianchi on the piano interprets a very rich repertoire that goes from the first Parisian experiences linked to the figure of Erik Satie, passing through the pages of Arnold Schönberg, to then arrive at the repertoire of Kurt Weill, Eisler and Benjamin Britten. All shows are free with optional donation; booking is mandatory on the website www.succedesoloabologna.it.

Wednesday 1 May, at 7pmon the occasion of the day that celebrates the right to work, Pop Up Cinema Jolly (Via Guglielmo Marconi 14, Bologna) presents the documentary “TOXICILY”, directed by Francois Xavier Destors and Alfonso Pinto, a film that gives voice to those who live on the coasts of the Syracuse petrochemical hub. To talk about the documentary which has just started its tour in Italian cinemas, the following will be present in the room: Alfonso Pinto author, Francesca Gabbriellini University of Bologna, GKN factory collective, Giada Coleandro for Extinction Rebellion (XR), Claudio Dellucca president of Legambiente Bologna, Bologna for Climate justice. The event is in collaboration with Armillaria edizioni, the brotherhood of grapes. The documentary tells the story of a territory, that of the province of Syracuse, which seventy years after the arrival of the first refineries seems to have been abandoned to itself and to the pollution of the sky, land and sea. Built around the inhabitants who resist and those reduced to silence and resignation, Toxicily ventures on the trail of an area sacrificed on the altar of progress, modernity and globalization.

Wednesday 1 May at 11.00 am in the Opera headquarters “Father Marella” of San Lazzaro di Savena (via dei Ciliegi, 4) Archbishop Zuppi will preside over the Mass with guests, volunteers and members of the Work.

Day of celebration May Day at Teatri di Vita with the “Ipotesi di pace” exhibition, which will then span the whole month with 4 shows and 4 films in collaboration with the magazine “Internazionale”. The start is with the now classic Spring Festival, which will also see the participation of Popular Cuisines with the solidarity lunch, and with a popular celebration program from filuzzi to tarot cards, from burraco to the open microphone for speeches or performances on the themes of Work, Peace and Solidarity.

From 1st to 3rd May (7pm) “dEVOLUTION” by the Teatro Zeta will be staged, directed by Rolando Macrini: a dialogue between a servant and a master on power and conflicts, which sees on stage, in addition to Manuele Morgese, the assistant directed by Peter Brook Jared Mcneill.

On the occasion of First of May the National Art Gallery of Bologna and Palazzo Pepoli Campogrande will be open from 9am to 7pm.
