After the success of the show The Seagull, director Leonardo Lidi tackles another great classic of the Russian playwright: Uncle Vanya, the second stage of the Chekhov project, on stage on Tuesday 30 April at 9pm at the Teatro dell’Unione, the last appointment of the new season from the collaboration between the Municipality of Viterbo and ATCL – Multidisciplinary circuit of Lazio supported by MIC – Ministry of Culture and Lazio Region.
«In this trilogy I see the possibility of returning to the practical sense of theatre – explains Lidi – diverting intellectualism and choosing simplicity in its height. Choosing a space. By choosing empathy and not an elitist bubble. Choosing the love and pain that this option entails but above all choosing actors as an art form and as a precious stone to defend in the Italian theater of our time.”
In a scene, pressed onto a wooden wall, created by Nicolas Bovey, the work of a close-knit group of actors stands out: Giordano Agrusta, Maurizio Cardillo, Ilaria Falini, Angela Malfitano, Francesca Mazza, Mario Pirrello, Tino Rossi, Massimiliano Speziani, Giuliana Vigogna.
On the estate where Vanya spends his placid existence, the arrival of Professor Serebrijakov, accompanied by his young wife Elena, is enough to destroy every balance. Between unhappy loves and lives never fully lived, Leonardo Lidi continues his journey towards the deepest meaning of theatre, capturing his narrative strength in simplicity. By choosing a space, by choosing the empathy, love and pain that this option entails, but above all by choosing the actors as an art form and as a precious stone to be defended in the Italian theater of our time.
«The second stage of the Chekhov Project– explains the director – he abandons the game and becomes ugly over time. He sweeps away the peasants who quote Dante by heart, to allow ambitious and muscular building abuse. There was a large green lawn where hopes are born and we built a suffocating house there with too many useless rooms occupying every living space. We had nuances and now there is a surgical black and white that winks at the intelligent viewer. We had women and men who sought life through love, but we preferred to distance ourselves from it. When? When did it become “too little” to talk about love? As if there was something else interesting. If in The Seagull we wasted paper and time in reasoning about the most correct form with which to convey emotions to the public, divided between realism and symbolism, between poetry and prose, between directors, writers and actresses, and a bench was enough for us to torment ourselves with heartaches , in Uncle Vanya art is relegated to a museum concept, the stuff of aristocratic pamphlets, a sterile intellectualism that no longer thinks of its people, which bores passion and allows the incapable to make a living from the theatre.”
